So, Xander.
/v/ has shown me something...interesting.
Let's just say that I have a few new ROMs for VBA.
And that they're Pokemon.

Now, say that when I try to save, through the pokemon in-game menu, it gives me the following error message:

Error: Cannot create save file Blah/blah/blah/blah/batteries.

Is there a cure?

Yes, you have to IPS patch them. It's a problem with the unique clock and battery system the Pokemon cartridges use.

The Pokemon ROMS I have distributed amongst you guys are patched and should work fine but the ones floating out there on the web aren't.

It works, kinda.
I can save the game using save states instead of in-game saving, so I guess it's technically working.

Also, the game I got is amazing. =D
I'm sure you'll love it.

*sigh*

Xander...I may need your help with my computer. I was hoping not to have to bother you, but there doesn't seem to be an easy solution to my problem. See, for some reason, Blizzard.com decided to screw with me (in non-monetary or game-related ways). I was downloading a SC patch when that annoying windows box popped up and said something along the lines that there was an error on the page and Internet Explorer needed to close (I know, I know, Inb4 "Internet Explorer sucks").

Well, the problem is, the window didn't wanna close. So the error message popped up again. Tried it again. Same result. Repeat 4-5 times in rapid succession. I then closed out the website itself, which worked fine, exept that the error messages aren't going away. One pops up each time I log onto my profile, freezing anything but itself and Task Manager while it's up. Of course, closing it causes my computer to start reloading my profile, prompting another pop-up, and, well, you get the picture. It's been happening for four days now, and the only way I can escape is by using my Guest account. It's rather annoying. My roomate's hacker friend/"computer wiz." suggests that I back up my [important] data via one of his programs and then run recovery. Well, I don't want to do that until it's absolutely necessary, both because it's time consuming, invasive, and frankly, I don't want to trust the guy with my data (no offense to him, but I don't like loose aquantances poking around my stuff).

So, not sure if you can fix it, or how easily, but I'd appreciate it if you'd take a quick look when we see each other next. I'll try getting some help from the techies here on campus, but, well, you know how they can be.

it would take him about 3 hours

but from what i am reading it sounds like IE is taking a shit on you

i would try to download mozilla

see if that helps...

if not im sure xander has a way to fix this problem

Likely I'd have done this myself if:

A) I had something with enough free space available to back up my stuff on (although perhaps it doesn't have to an external source? Sorry, my mediocrity is starting to show).
B) I have perhaps 20 seconds of grace before the box pops up and freezes all other activity on the computer. Those 20 seconds are not enough to back up the majority of my files, and that's not even considering that my computer would be operating slowly, as it will be busy booting up. I can't access the files from my guest account either, because it doesn't have administrative status.

PostSubject: Re: XANDERRRRR D;<   23/09/09, 11:46 pm

Well, here's a few things I thought of while reading this:

There's a big security flaw in IE that can be used to corrupt your computer stuff and cause crashes and the like (basically like a virus), I've heard some things about it being used through invalid security certificates, which may have been the page error you discovered.

There's also a problem I've seen with a beta version of IE 7 where a large file checksum caused big problems, though it just crashed the program it didn't try to write weird-error ridden settings to your user variables.

SO basically in plain english something happened, whether it be security or programming related, to your internet explorer, it tried to write something wrong into your user settings and wants to load those user settings on startup.

Because the nature of this problem, you can't go about things in your usual fashion, as you don't have administrative privileges, so there's only a few things I can really recommend with the computer basically locking itself down.

First start up task manager, go into the processes tab and right-click explorer.exe and click end process tree, after that, go up into the file menu and click new task, type explorer.exe to restart the process sans all the extra crap. If that doesn't do it, find the iexplore.exe process and end that process tree (if there's multiple instances of the process, do it to all of them), see if either of these methods can offer some sort of respite from your troubles.

Otherwise there may be a hidden administrative account on your computer, most OEM installed windows have one for Remote Assistance usage. To get to it, you'll have to boot up into safe mode, to do this hit F8 while your computer starts up, before the windows logo. If you can get into safe mode and get on the the hidden account (you can also try your account and see if it still locks up) you can get administrative privileges to create a new administrator profile and delete the old bugged one. From here you can also try a system restore if you have that enabled and see if setting windows back a little while might fix it.

Beyond that, I wouldn't know what else to do without seeing it in person.

Next time we hang out I'll give your computer an overhaul and I swear it'll be like new. Because remember Prevention is the name of the game, not Treatment.

Hope something helps!

Just tried the task manager end process tree trick, and it's not doing a thing. Also had a very close look at all my programs and services. Tried disabling quite a few of them, only to turn them back on when the problem didn't go away; I was too squimish about turning off Windows or Startup though

I also tried to look at the programs list as the box popped up, so that I could note which program was causing the problem. It does not appear to show up, and I cannot determine the origin program.

Also, it is interesting to note that when the internet browser program is turned off, making it (so far as I can tell) literally impossible to access the internet, there still manages to be an error with my web browser

The only good thing that's come out of this is that I took a look at my performance and whatnot while I was in task manager. Apparently, my wireless connection here has a speed of something like 36 mbps. On the LAN network, however, it's 100 mbps. I'll be getting into that ASAP.
